Koolpin Gorge is a restricted access area. Access is granted on a ‘first in’ request based upon already previously allocated dates and visitor numbers. Kakadu 4WD Safaris hold a special licence for Casual access which means we can take you there on a private charter tour that has been planned and booked well in advance.  All bookings are subject to Permit approval and accessibility.  Generally this region opens earlier than the more northern waterfall destinations, usually around mid April.

Escape the crowds and discover Kakadu's hidden secret, Jarrangbarnmi (Koolpin Gorge), nestled away in the remote southern region of the Park.  Absorb the essence of this rugged, pristine and secluded landscape.  The best time to visit this region is between April to July.

Day 1 - Darwin to Kakadu - Waterfall Wonderland - Maguk & Gunlom

• Pick up from accommodation approx 6.30am
• Drive to Kakadu via the old Jim Jim road heading for one of our favourite waterfalls Maguk (Barramundi Gorge).  Nestled amongst the sandstone escarpment at the end of a paper-bark lined creek, the rock pools above and the plunge pool below the falls provide a refreshing swimming opportunity.
• Then its off to Gunlom.  On arrival we set up camp before hiking to the top of the falls for a swim in the renowned ‘Infinity’ pool and watch a breathtaking sunset.  A quick scramble back down the ridge before it gets too dark and enjoy another hearty meal.
• Tonight we camp at Gunlom by the waterfall, Showers and toilets are available.

Day 2 – Kakadu - Rugged & remote 4WD, Hiking & Swimming - Jarrangbarnmi (Koolpin Gorge)

Today we spend most of the day exploring the restricted area of Jarrangbarnmi.  Also known as Koolpin gorge, this area is Kakadu’s biggest hidden secret!  A full day of 4 wheel driving and hiking in this secluded pristine habitat is truly special.  With limited access to only 40 people per day, we will virtually have the place to ourselves!
• Late in the afternoon we travel back towards the centre of the Park for an overnight camp at Mardugal.  Showers and toilets available.

Day 3 - Kakadu to Darwin - Rock Art & Wildlife - Your Choice!

• Today you have a couple of options depending on your preferences!
• Maybe start the day off with a sun rise Yellow Waters cruise to learn about the important wetland habitats and maybe even see a few Crocodiles!
  • Then view ancient Aboriginal rock art and take in the spectacular scenery as we climb atop the rocky outcrop for majestic views of the Arnhemland sandstone plateau at either Ubirr or Nourlangie.
  • Alternatively, rather than the Wetlands cruise, you may prefer the Guluyambi Cultural Cruise on the East Alligator River instead.
  • Return to Darwin by 6pm.
