After a brief stop at The Bark Hut Inn and a ‘tourist’ photo snap at the entry to Kakadu we make our way towards Ubirr.  View ancient Aboriginal rock art at Ubirr and take in the spectacular scenery as we climb atop the rocky outcrop for majestic views of the Arnhemland sandstone plateau. Join the Guluyambi Cultural cruise on the East Alligator River to gain an amazing insight into local customs and dreamtime stories from the local Indigenous guide. We may even see a few Crocodiles! Travel to our overnight campsite..   (LD)


Day 2 - Time for a a spot of real 4 Wheel Driving today as we travel out towards Jim Jim  and Twin Falls.   After crossing the Jim Jim creek, we arrive at Twin Falls and cruise through the gorge, admiring the towering escarpment from the sandy beach.  En route back to Jim Jim, we have an early lunch and walk to the Budjimi lookout for spectacular views of the escarpment walls.  Arriving at Jim Jim Falls, walk through the monsoon forest and enjoy an invigorating swim in the plunge pool.  Return late afternoon back to our camp at Djarradjin Billabong.  (BLD)


Day 3
 - Up early, we don’t want to miss out. 
Make our way to Maguk, one of our favourite waterfalls, for yet another hike and refreshing swim. Travel back to Darwin along the old Darwin road and return you to your Darwin accommodation between 6 and 7pm.

This year commemorates the 32nd anniversary of one of Australia's most important Indigenous festivals - Barunga. Join us for SIX days of cultural immersion as we head down to the festival before exploring the rest of the Top End.

Make your long weekend a week long cultural immersion and Top End exploration!


This much loved Territory event sees people from all over the country descend upon the small Indigenous community south of Katherine where they camp and take part in a program of workshops, dancing ceremonies, didgeridoo making, basket weaving and enjoy plenty of great music and sport from the region. Barunga Festival is an exciting time for the
community as they reunite with family members and countrymen from all over the Top End, and welcome tourists from far and near to experience contemporary community life for the weekend.

Join in activities at the Festival before exploring Kakadu, Nitmiluk & Litchfield National Parks in depth as you immerse yourself in Indigenous culture, spectacular & refreshing waterfalls and view an array of wildlife & mesmerising scenery.


Day 1 (Saturday) – Darwin to Barunga (LD)

Depart Darwin @ 7.00am and make our way towards Katherine. A brief stop at Adelaide River maybe for some breakfast and continue on to Edith Falls for a swim and lunch. Travel on through Katherine and arrive at Barunga (45 min south of Katherine.) mid-afternoon to set up camp in the community camp-ground. Get involved in some of the activities and relax in the evening listening to the Indigenous bands at the Skinnyfish stage or other featured artists down at the riverside APRA tent.

Day 2 (Sunday) – Barunga Festival (BLD)

A whole day to partake in all the different activities available. These include: Damper Cooking, Yidaki (didgeridoo) Making and Demonstration, Weaving Workshops, Bush Tucker, Spear Throwing Competition, Kriol Language Classes & Women’s Story Telling. Spend the evening listening to some fabulous music at either the Skinnyfish stage or the APRA riverside tent.

Day 3 (Monday) – Barunga to Kakadu (BLD)

Pack up camp early and make our way back through Katherine, detouring out to Nitmiluk Gorge for a 2 Hr cruise. Departing the Katherine region, we head back north to Pine Creek and on to Kakadu. This afternoon we visit one our favourite waterfalls, Gunlom   Overnight camp here with time to explore, relax and swim.

Day 4 (Tuesday) – Kakadu (BLD)

We head northwards through the Park to our next favourite waterfall - Maguk(Barramundi Gorge). Nestled amongst the sandstone escarpment at the end of a paper-bark lined creek. The rock pools above and the plunge pool below the falls provide a refreshing swim option. Call in at the Warradjan Cultural Centre before watching a magical sunset on a Yellow Waters Cruise before heading to our overnight camping area. 

Day 5 (Wednesday) – Kakadu to Litchfield (BLD)

This morning we head to the northern region of Kakadu for another day of cultural immersion. Join the Guluyambi Cultural cruise on the East Alligator River to gain an amazing insight into local customs and dreamtime stories from the local Indigenous guide. We may even see a few Crocodiles! View ancient Aboriginal rock art at Ubirr and take in the spectacular scenery as we climb atop the rocky outcrop for majestic views of the Arnhemland sandstone plateau. Travel towards Darwin on the Arnhem Highway, calling in at The Bark Hut Inn for a break before taking a 4WD detour across to our overnight accommodation near Litchfield.

Day 6 (Thursday) - Litchfield to Darwin (BL)

A Short drive to Litchfield National Park this morning so we beat the crowds and explore, relax and swim in some fantastic easily accessible waterfalls.  A fantastic way to finish off our Top End expedition.  We return you to your Darwin accommodation around 5pm so you can check in and get down to the Mindil Beach sunset Markets.

Koolpin Gorge Charter - 3 Days

Escape the crowds and discover Kakadu's hidden secret, Jarrangbarnmi (Koolpin Gorge), nestled away in the remote southern region of the Park. Absorb the essence of this rugged, pristine and secluded landscape.

Koolpin Gorge is a restricted access area. Access is granted on a ‘first in’ request based upon already previously allocated dates and visitor numbers. Kakadu 4WD Safaris hold a special licence for Casual access which means we can take you there on a private charter tour that has been planned and booked well in advance.  All bookings are subject to Permit approval and accessibility.  Generally this region opens earlier than the more northern waterfall destinations, usually around mid April.

Escape the crowds and discover Kakadu's hidden secret, Jarrangbarnmi (Koolpin Gorge), nestled away in the remote southern region of the Park.  Absorb the essence of this rugged, pristine and secluded landscape.  The best time to visit this region is between April to July.

Day 1 - Darwin to Kakadu - Waterfall Wonderland - Maguk & Gunlom


• Pick up from accommodation approx 6.30am
• Drive to Kakadu via the old Jim Jim road heading for one of our favourite waterfalls Maguk (Barramundi Gorge).  Nestled amongst the sandstone escarpment at the end of a paper-bark lined creek, the rock pools above and the plunge pool below the falls provide a refreshing swimming opportunity.
• Then its off to Gunlom.  On arrival we set up camp before hiking to the top of the falls for a swim in the renowned ‘Infinity’ pool and watch a breathtaking sunset.  A quick scramble back down the ridge before it gets too dark and enjoy another hearty meal.   
• Tonight we camp at Gunlom by the waterfall, Showers and toilets are available.

Day 2 – Kakadu - Rugged & remote 4WD, Hiking & Swimming - Jarrangbarnmi (Koolpin Gorge)


Today we spend most of the day exploring the restricted area of Jarrangbarnmi.  Also known as Koolpin gorge, this area is Kakadu’s biggest hidden secret!  A full day of 4 wheel driving and hiking in this secluded pristine habitat is truly special.  With limited access to only 40 people per day, we will virtually have the place to ourselves! 
• Late in the afternoon we travel back towards the centre of the Park for an overnight camp at Mardugal.  Showers and toilets available.

Day 3 - Kakadu to Darwin - Rock Art & Wildlife - Your Choice!


• Today you have a couple of options depending on your preferences!
• Maybe start the day off with a sun rise Yellow Waters cruise to learn about the important wetland habitats and maybe even see a few Crocodiles!  
  • Then view ancient Aboriginal rock art and take in the spectacular scenery as we climb atop the rocky outcrop for majestic views of the Arnhemland sandstone plateau at either Ubirr or Nourlangie.
  • Alternatively, rather than the Wetlands cruise, you may prefer the Guluyambi Cultural Cruise on the East Alligator River instead. 
  • Return to Darwin by 6pm.

Cruise the Adelaide river and get up close to(safely!) the infamous Salt-water crocodiles.
Travel towards Kakadu, crossing the Marrakai and South Alligator floodplains.
Keep an eye out for any wildlife amongst the woodlands and floodplains.
View ancient Aboriginal Rock art at Nourlangie and take in our first breathtaking vistas of the Arnhemland sandstone plateau.
Overnight Air-Conditioned Bunkhouse Accommodation at either Anbinik Resort Jabiru or Mary River Roadhouse.

Day 2. (BL)

Early start as we explore some of Kakadu's hidden waterfalls for a refreshing swim.
We may either be taking a walk into Gubara Pools and exploring the region around Nourlangie Or we maybe heading into Motorcar falls in the southern region - this is entirely dependent on the condition of roads.  After a day of walking and swimming we make our way back to Darwin.


Rest assured that no matter when you visit, we will provide you with the best itinerary possible and your Kakadu experience will not be disappointing!
